This oval casserole dish with warmer is a 15 inch (38.1cm) white porcelain-style dish with a glossy ribbed exterior and a fitted transparent glass lid, resting on a silver-coloured metal stand with two tealight candle holders underneath. Bake and serve
The oval shape suits roasts, lasagne, pasta bakes, biryani, roast vegetables, fish and gratins. Bake the dish in the oven, lift it onto the warmer stand at the table, light the tealights and keep the lid on between helpings. One dish from oven to table means less washing up and a hot second helping for everyone.
Using tealight warmers
Tealight warmers keep food gently warm at the table without electricity. Fill the oval casserole dish with warmer with food that is already hot, place it on its stand, light the tealights and set them in their holders beneath the dish. Keep the warmer on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from napkins, decorations and curtains, and never leave lit candles unattended or within reach of children.
Tealights keep food warm; they do not heat cold food, so always serve from hot.
Food safety
For hot food that sits out at a buffet, the Food Standards Agency advises keeping it at 63°C or above, or serving it within a short time. Replace a dish that has been out for a long time with a fresh batch from the kitchen, keep the lid on between servings and use a separate serving spoon for each dish.
Buffets and family dinners
A warming dish on the table means everyone can help themselves to seconds while the food stays warm, which is ideal for family dinners, Eid gatherings, Christmas, birthdays and buffets. Set out a oval casserole dish with warmer for the main dish with rice, salads and breads around it, and the host can sit down and enjoy the meal too.
Tealight tips
Use standard tealights in their metal cups and keep spares nearby for long meals; most tealights burn for a few hours. Light them just before guests sit down and blow them out once the meal is finished. Trim any long wicks so the flames stay small and steady, and keep the area around the oval casserole dish with warmer clear so nothing can catch.
What to serve
Warming dishes suit any food that is served hot and enjoyed over a long meal: biryani, pilau and fried rice, chicken and lamb curries, daal, pasta bakes, lasagne, roast potatoes and vegetables, stews, shepherd’s pie and macaroni cheese. For a breakfast buffet, keep scrambled eggs, beans or sausages warm. A oval casserole dish with warmer keeps each dish ready for second helpings.
Planning a buffet
Lay the buffet in the order guests will serve themselves: plates first, then rice, mains and vegetables in their warming dishes, then breads, salads and cutlery at the end. Leave space in front of each dish for a serving spoon, label anything spicy or containing allergens, and refill dishes from the kitchen rather than piling food high. With a oval casserole dish with warmer at the centre, the buffet looks organised and the food stays warm.
Why a warming dish
Food goes cold quickly on a busy table, especially at long family meals where people come back for seconds. A warming dish keeps the main dish appealing until the end of the meal without anyone having to take it back to the kitchen to reheat. Because the oval casserole dish with warmer uses tealights rather than electricity, it can go anywhere on the table, with no trailing cables.
Styling the table
Set the warming dish in the middle of the table on a heat-resistant mat or a wooden board, with rice, salads, breads and sauces arranged around it. Add candles in holders, fresh flowers and a linen runner, and the oval casserole dish with warmer becomes the centrepiece of a dinner party, an Eid meal or a festive buffet.
Practical tips
Bring the dish to the table with oven gloves, as both the dish and the stand can be hot. Place the stand first, light the tealights, then set the filled dish on top. Keep a serving spoon on a saucer beside the oval casserole dish with warmer, and put the lid back on between helpings to hold in the warmth. When the meal is over, blow out the candles before moving anything.
Keep a spare pack of tealights with the dish so it is always ready for the next meal.
Care and cleaning
Blow out the tealights and let everything cool before cleaning. Wash the dish and lid in warm soapy water with a soft sponge, wipe the stand with a damp cloth and dry it, and remove any spilled wax from the holders once it has hardened. Do not put a hot dish on a cold, wet surface or into cold water, as sudden temperature changes can crack it.
